Topic Two: Pattern and Ornament, Part 2 of 2- Assignment #4 Quadrant Abstraction

"Radiance"
Acrylic on Ceramic
11 in x 7 in x 15 in

I was assigned the top left quadrant. My quadrant shows triangular shapes and a sun in the center. My Chair also has a garden feeling to it and so I was inspired to paint a pot. The center of my piece is the radiant sun and I outlined curved triangles in between the rays of the sun. I was also inspired by the class teachings of pattern and the circular shapes in my chair to create a pattern of different sized circles in different shades of blue. The succulent is a Kalanchoe Luciae which is Native to South Africa. This succulent thrives best in bright sunlight so I thought it would go along with the center of my pot. I chose the small table because it gave me a garden feel just like my chair. Also it has sunlike patterns on the sides of it.

Process:
I drew the suns on each side of the pot in pencil and went over it with acrylic paint. I used a small circular brush for the stippling. From that point I created circular designs in between each sun to connect them. I used a different shade of blue for each ripple in each circle. Then I outlined everything in black paint. After I finished painting the pot I went to my collection of plants a succulents and chose the one I thought was best for what my piece represented. I carefully removed it from it's old pot and placed it in it's new home with new soil. For the table I knocked on my neighbors door who I am a stranger to and asked him if I could borrow his table for an art project.

This piece was something like I have never done before. It was fun to try something new and I realized how long stippling takes in the process. 96% of everything painted on the pot is stippled. Every time I walked past my neighbors porch and saw the table I thought it was so perfect but i'm very shy and didn't even know them at all. I kept wanting to ask them but was too shy until finally I felt brave and overcame that thinking "what's the worst that can happen", so I went to knock on my neighbors door and asked him if I could borrow his table for an art project and he said of course and was very kind about it. By creating this piece I stepped out of my comfort zone by trying something i've never done and by overcoming my shyness. Also the lights in the house during night time were not enough for me to see so I wore a headband with a flashlight on my head to see.
