Topic Two: Pattern and Ornament, Part 1 of 2 . In-class Exercises and Assignment One: Kit and Instructions

Directed Drawings

This in class exercise was fun and different. I didn't really understand the reason for the random instructions at first. I enjoyed seeing everyone's different drawings and it was funny to watch everyone's confused faces. I really enjoyed this whole assignment because it made most of the students make something they have never made before. When the time came to explain how I created my model, I realized how intricate my process of making art can be and how hard to explain it was.

Process: I followed the verbal instructions that were given to us and ended drawing shapes and lines in different colors. For the kit I sketched steps as I was creating so that I would not forget and then I observed each part of my model to create instructions on how to replicate it. I packed all the tools ad materials needed in a plastic bag along with the instructions.

Materials: 1.Markers
    2. Sketchbook
3. Ruler
4. Exacto knife
5. Utility knife
6. Paint
7. Thick paper
8. Tape
9. Glue

2D-to-3D Translation
I had never turned a drawing into a 3D model before and I love trying new things so I found this project very enjoyable and experimental.

Kits

Replication of Classmate's 3D Model
I paired up with Alejandra Jimenez and we each attempted to replicate each others models using the instructions and kits provided. Personally, it went well for me except for one part that took me several attempts. In the end I was successful in replicating her model. Her instructions were very effective and easy to follow.

This is my planning of my instructions in my sketchbook for my kit.

This is my model with my instructions and the replication that Alejandra made.
She told me that she struggled a little replicating it but in the end she was able to replicate it.

I really enjoyed this whole assignment because it made most of the students make something they have never made before. When the time came to explain how I created my model, I realized how intricate my process of making art can be and how hard to explain it was.
